Studying the Earth and Sustainability

If you are passionate about exploring God’s world and discovering how to care for His Creation, dig into Taylor University’s Environmental Science program. Students who major in Environmental Science integrate biology, chemistry, and geology with environmental laws, policies, economics, and ethics for an interdisciplinary understanding of the Earth and sustainability.

Our award-winning Randall Center provides a space dedicated to students’ hands-on learning, including our field-based courses in Taylor’s 145-acre arboretum—a site for environmental study just outside of Randall Center. Students learn investigative techniques to better conserve and restore the environment. Student also participate in our specialized field course in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which includes a week-long field trip in the Rocky Mountains, as well as international opportunities in Ecuador and Africa.

Biology Concentration

Students who desire to focus on living organisms and their relationship to the earth can do so with the biology track. You will learn to classify plant species, assess integrity of ecological systems, in courses such as taxonomy, anatomy, systems ecology, vertebrate natural history. Learn to develop sustainable food systems with courses in sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Geology Concentration

For students interested in investigating the earth’s physical structure and substance, the geology track is a good fit. You will inspect the processes that act upon the earth and how to best preserve natural resources through courses on soil science, earth materials, geomorphology, hydrology, water resources, and resource planning.
