Prior to joining the State Department, Tamara worked at the U.S. Agency for International Development where she held several roles, including Senior Desk Officer for Lebanon Affairs, Peacebuilding Advisor for the Middle East, and Communicators Advisor for Women's Empowerment. Prior to joining government service, Tamara worked as a consultant to the ONE Campaign working on alleviating HIV/AIDS, and as the Director of Media for a non-profit that fostered dialogue between Christians and Muslims. She is married to Derek, a fellow Taylor graduate and U.S. diplomat.

He has served as Senior Advisor to the Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Special Assistant to President George W. He lives with his family in the Washington, DC area.

Dr. Poland participates on national and academic review committees and has published over 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He and his wife live in Marco Island, Florida.
