Provost
Jewerl Maxwell serves as Provost of Taylor University. Since arriving at Taylor in November 2021, he has facilitated the launch of new undergraduate programs in Entrepreneurship & Economic Development, Mechanical Engineering, and Nursing, along with graduate programs in Leadership (M.A. and Ph.D.) and Physician Assistant Studies (M.S.). Additionally, Taylor affirmed the importance of the Foundational Core curriculum, emphasizing “Cultivating Wisdom,” and incorporated the Scripture Engagement minor into the Foundational Core. In his work as Provost, Jewerl is committed to building on Taylor's historic identity as a leading Christ-centered, liberal arts institution and widening the circle of learners.
Jewerl previously served as Vice President for Academic Initiatives and Dean of Graduate, Professional, and Extended Studies at Gordon College. Under his leadership, Gordon’s graduate and extended studies programs grew exponentially, and partnerships were forged with multiple institutions and associations across the United States and in Africa and South America. In addition to his administrative experience, Jewerl has spent significant time in the classroom, teaching American Politics and International Relations at Emory & Henry College, Thiel College, and Cedarville University (where he also served as the Associate Dean of the Center for Lifelong Learning). His research on presidential unilateral powers has led to multiple publications, including a 2012 book Tough Times for the President: Political Adversity and the Sources of Presidential Power (Cambria Press), a 2017 journal article “Has Barack Obama Embraced the Unitary Executive” (PS: Political Science & Politics), and a 2022 book chapter entitled “How President Obama Made Unilateralism Safe for His Successors” (Palgrave).
Jewerl and his wife, Ashley, live in Upland with their four children. They rarely miss Taylor athletic events and are frequent visitors to the Dining Commons. When he is not working, supporting Taylor athletics, or serving as a personal taxi driver for his kids, Jewerl can usually be found in The Well fitness center.
