Biography

I grew up in Brazil, South America, and then I came to the United States to be a college student in 1981. I ended up getting married, and I stuck around. Dave and I have an adult daughter who lives in California with her family, and we also have an adult “special needs” son who lives at home with us. (Here’s a little bit of Wesley’s story in case you're interested. The video was produced way back in 2013, but you’ll get the general idea.)

I’ve been teaching Spanish and German at the college level for many years. Since I grew up in Brazil, I’m a native Portuguese speaker. But since I also grew up in a German subculture, I’m a native German speaker as well. I learned English when I got to the United States, and my college majors were German and Spanish. I became a naturalized American citizen in 2012, and I also remain a citizen of Brazil.

I have a master’s degree in Spanish. I’m a licensed medical interpreter, and I’ve done interpreting and translating for a number of clients over the years. I’m an evaluator for the College Board’s AP classes. My husband and I have led a number of student groups to Germany and England.
