Where Can I Study Abroad in January?

Some of the academic J-Term trips below are open to all students, and others are designed for specific majors or classes. 

The January term (J-Term) Belize trip is designed to provide Education students with experience teaching abroad in a different culture.

The Roth Center for Missions Computing will be sending two teams of students to help missionary organizations with technology projects. Computer Science & Engineering students can earn either COS 344 Missions Computing or COS 433 Missions Computing. 

Missions Computing J-Term Trip

Sponsored by the History, Global & Political Studies Department, the Egypt J-Term experience takes students to Cairo and Luxor to explore the culture of ancient and modern Egypt through an interdisciplinary approach that covers history, religion, politics, architecture, art, language, geography/environment, diplomatic relations, and gender relations.

The Biblical Studies, Christian Ministries, Intercultural Studies & Philosophy Department  shepherds students through a three-week trip to Greece and Italy during J-Term to cover a core Bible credit. The trip focuses on Paul’s letters to various churches either sent to or from cities in Greece and Italy during his second and third missionary journeys. Students visit key sites including Thessaloniki, Athens, Corinth, and Rome.

Complete the requirements for Spanish 270 at beautiful Lake Atitlán. This three-week, Spanish-immersion trip will include staying with a host family, 1:1 Spanish instruction, learning about Mayan culture and the local church, and visiting Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The HEART Program is offered those desiring to serve in developing countries. Students live and learn in a simulated village. Emphasis is on technical skill learning in agriculture (animals and horticulture), appropriate technology, cross-cultural communication and community development, nutrition and food preparation, and primary health care. Students receive three hours of credit for this program, which takes place at the HEART (Hunger Education and Resources Training) Institute in Lake Wales, Florida.

Taylor Biology majors, Environmental Science majors, and other students seeking to earn a Foundational Core credit can travel to Hawaii for an intensive three-week Tropical Biology class.

Taylor University students partner with students in Handong University in South Korea to teach English to students in Indonesia during January Term.

The Cornwall School of Business sponsors the international business study tour during J-Term. In recent years, the group has traveled to China, Hong Kong, and Macau, focusing on three dynamic and distinctive economic systems. The group visits a variety of international and local businesses and local schools. Previous trips have also included a symposium with business students at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Join us on pilgrimage to holy sites and other locations throughout Ireland. This study abroad experience explores Celtic monastic life, emphasizing personal and social well-being with a focus on developing our abilities to relate well across cultures and building relationships of mutual respect.

Students who have been accepted into the Honors Guild are invited to go to Italy for January term their freshman year.

Want to see how God is working through rural churches in Africa? Join the service-learning J-term course SUS 325 Sustainable Development in Practice (4 credits) focusing on community development. The experience will include a village homestay (in groups), community work, and safari to see the beauty of God’s creation. You'll be hosted by World Renew, a leading Christian development agency.

The English & Modern Languages Department sponsors Literary London, a study tour combining reading of major British authors (Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, Virginia Woolf, and others) with extensive sightseeing.

Most of the trip is spent in London, with the class also traveling to Edinburgh and other locations of literary significance. Taylor students have been participating in this trip for over 45 years!

Study Abroad Scholarship

If you are planning to study abroad for a semester or J-term and are a current Pell Grant recipient or anticipate being one next year, consider applying for the Gilman Scholarship.

The Gilman Scholarship application has specific term deadlines. Apply early even if your study abroad program is next year. If you have any questions, contact the Financial Aid Office at [email protected] or 765-998-5358.

Admission can be competitive depending on your chosen program, and applicants are evaluated based on the written application, GPA, letters of reference, and a personal interview. Good academic, social, and financial standing with the University are also requirements for acceptance.
