Hello! After 20+ years working in the corporate world (journalism, communications, and marketing), I left to find a greater purpose for my life. By working for non-profits, I found my calling in Education and enrolled in Taylor's Transition to Teaching program in May 2020.
Completing the online program allowed me to continue working in elementary schools, where I gained valuable experiences.
In May, I accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Monrovia Elementary School. It is my dream job because I will be teaching writing and helping students become highly effective writers and storytellers.
Having the prayers, guidance, and encouragement from the Transition to Teaching team was invaluable and appreciated. From the leadership of April Dickey and her staff to all of my professors and Jen Flueck, my student teaching supervisor, I was set up for success from beginning to end.
The knowledge and classroom experience of my professors was invaluable. They were readily available when I had questions.
I believe the coursework itself provided not only excellent instruction but also valuable insights about working with students.
I am confident the knowledge and experiences I gained at Taylor have prepared me for a classroom where students will not only learn but also make real-world connections with what they know.
Teaching is truly a calling that only God can give to you. Be certain of it and move forward fully relying on God to provide everything (i.e., strength, courage, compassion, patience, empathy, forgiveness, etc.) you will need before and after you become a teacher.
Teaching is a profession of service - serving all students, regardless of how they may treat you in the classroom. Don't give up on those who challenge you, because they need you the most. Many students of today walk into school carrying a large bag of trauma from their home lives. Find a way to connect with them by modeling compassion, patience, forgiveness, and most importantly, love. Use your actions to speak louder than your words.
Put your students first and build positive relationships. Be the Jesus they need to see, know, trust, and love.
