Within Without, an exhibit celebrating the works of artists Jarrod Beck, Andrea Myers, Jordan Tate, and Olivia Moore opens Friday, February 6 in the Modelle Metcalf Gallery. At 6:00 p.m., Beck will give a lecture in MMVA room 002; a reception will follow.
The exhibit is curated by Suzanne Dittenber.
The show focuses on structure, the contrast between interior and exterior, inside and outside. The paper layers of Beck’s massive installation Slip Strike could be a representation of geological time, while Myers cave-like sculpture Knotted Gnaw, according to art writer Erik Wenzel, brings to mind a Kinder Egg – the treasure of colored fabric peeks through playfully from the inside. Olivia Moore’s video Directions features a shirt sleeve suspended in air, flaccid and empty until the wind animates it. Jordan Tate’s New Work #173 and #174 addresses the very structure of photography utilizing a red rocky landscape, rulers for scale, and soil charts.
NYC artist Jarrod Beck’s drawings are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), NY. In 2012, his installation Balance was supported by the US Embassy in Venezuela. Beck’s MFA is from the University of Texas at Austin.
Andrea Myers is represented by galleries in Columbus, Ohio and Dallas, Texas. In 2014, she was awarded the Seed Grant Art Prize. Myers earned her MFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
Jordan Tate is Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Cincinnati, and a Fulbright Fellow. He earned his MFA from Indiana University, and has recently exhibited at the Herron School of Art, UK. Tate has work in the Museum of Contemporary Photography and Cincinnati Art Museum.
Olivia Moore earned her MFA from the University of Texas, Austin. She was recently nominated for the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant Program, and has exhibited at the International Sculpture Center, NJ, Grand Arts, MO, and Salt Lake Art Center, UT.
