Taylor Alumnus Wins Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Award for STEM Education

2016 Taylor University alumnus Zachary Alford is one of 24 recipients of the 2018 teaching fellowship by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Alford, who is now teaching in the State of Georgia, graduated with summa cum laude honors from Taylor, earning a BA in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. 

During his college career, Alford served as a camp counselor, interned at the Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis, and interned as a software developer. He also volunteered at the Red Barn in Upland for an after-school program with middle and high school students.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation works to prepare top-quality secondary educators in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), for underserved public schools in Georgia. The Wilson Fellowship process is one that is highly competitive and selects educators who demonstrate impact and a strong STEM background.                

Awardees receive $30,000 to complete their master’s degree. Following completion of the master’s program, the educator agrees to work for three years teaching in Georgia’s rural and urban schools where strong STEM teachers are needed. The Woodrow Wilson Foundation partners with a wide range of school districts throughout the State of Georgia.

He was presented with the fellowship award at the state capitol building by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and President of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, Arthur Levine.

Alford, who is currently teaching in Georgia, will pursue his Master’s degree at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
