Taylathon Bike Races, Memorial Service Highlight Heritage Weekend

  • Published: Apr 21, 2015 1:45PM

Taylor University’s 2015 Heritage Weekend begins Friday, April 24, and continues Saturday, April 25, with events including Grandparents Day, Taylor’s annual men’s and women’s bike races Taylathon, music and the annual Service of Remembrance and Hope.

Heritage Day has been celebrated on the Taylor campus for nearly 10 years and brings alumni, family and friends to campus for two days of special events, music, performances and food. Featured events include the annual Service of Remembrance and Hope, the musical I Love a Piano, a concert by the Taylor Chorale, and the annual Taylathon bicycle races.

Grandparents Day on Friday is an annual event that brings dozens of Taylor students' grandparents to campus. During the course of the day, grandparent visitors will attend chapel and classes with their grandchildren, take campus tours, and enjoy a concert featuring the Taylor Chorale.

Friday’s Service of Remembrance and Hope at the Memorial Prayer Chapel will mark the ninth anniversary of the 2006 van accident that claimed five members of the Taylor University community. The event, originally created to remember the lives of Laurel Erb, Monica Felver, Brad Larson, Betsy Smith and Laura Van Ryn, now honors their lives as well as the lives and memories of all students, faculty and staff who died while studying or working at Taylor University.

Heritage Weekend is also the opening weekend for the Taylor Theatre production I Love a Piano in the Mitchell Theatre. I Love a Piano features 60 of beloved composer Irving Berlin's best-loved works.

Taylathon begins Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on a campus sidewalk course in front of Helena Memorial Hall and features teams of men’s and women’s bicycle riders from the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes.
