Taylor Theatre: Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

The Taylor University Theatre season sets sail with Shakespeare’s beloved comedy Twelfth Night, reimagined in a lively, pirate-inspired world of music, shipwrecks, swordplay, mistaken identity, and unexpected love. Performances take place on September 24–26 at 7:30 pm and September 26 and 27 at 2 pm in Taylor University’s Mitchell Theatre. After a storm separates Viola from her twin brother, she washes ashore in a strange country and disguises herself in order to survive. What follows is one of Shakespeare’s most joyful, and surprisingly poignant, explorations of love, grief, identity, desire, and the human need to be known.

Artistic Director Tracy Manning speaks to the heart of the play: “Beneath the comedy, Twelfth Night asks serious questions. What happens when we construct identities to protect ourselves? When does desire allow us to see another person, and when does it cause us to see only what we want? How might love interrupt grief, pride, isolation, and self-protection? For Taylor Theatre, Shakespeare’s comedy becomes a story about the vulnerability of being truly seen and the surprising abundance that becomes possible when tightly controlled lives are opened to relationship, generosity, and grace.”
