I graduated from Taylor in 2021 as an Environmental Science major with concentration in biology. I began my first job in the environmental science field while I was still attending Taylor. I worked for Endless Knot Community Farm, a regenerative farm in Fairmount, Indiana. I was the market garden manager, and I was responsible for the development, production, and sale of organically grown vegetables. I also helped with caring for the livestock at the farm which included caring for 1200 laying chickens, 150 sheep, and 36 cattle. I worked there for a year before moving on and joining another regenerative farm close to Fort Wayne called Seven Sons Farm. I was the assistant poultry manager and I was responsible for moving, caring for, and gathering the eggs from 20,000 laying chickens. I learned a lot from these farms. I was very appreciative of the holistic approach of the farms. I am currently employed with Asplundh Tree Experts. I am a forestry consultant that works with the regional power company (IMP) to assess tree and vegetative hazards to the power lines. I evaluate the trees and vegetation around the power lines and determine if work needs to be conducted based on species, growth rates, and distances from the power lines.
The most valuable experience that I had while at Taylor was my summer practical with Professor Reber. I assisted him in performing a final observation of a hardwood forest behind Taylor, as well as a hardwood plantation that is in the same vicinity. This experience gave me experience in the field while utilizing the knowledge that I had gained through the curriculum.
My interactions with my professors at Taylor taught me so much about professionalism and the importance of networking. I gained much insight in and out of the classroom from all of my professors. The professors genuinely care about the student’s life as well as their growth in knowledge over the course of their time in this program.
The core values that Taylor tries to instill are invaluable in every discipline including Environmental Science. The ability to value and treat others respectfully in all circumstances has proven to be very useful in my job. I interact with many nonbelievers on a daily basis.
The best piece of advice I would give is to “dig into the material” as much as possible. Do this not only to achieve the grades that you desire, but to also retain knowledge that will be necessary in this field. Also, take every chance you can to gain experience in the field while you are at Taylor. Do not just complete the minimum that is necessary for graduation. Complete multiple studies or internships to broaden the experiences and relationships that you have with professionals in this field.
