Most likely to be creative and fashionable, Jerchovia Moxey is an Art Director and self-taught sewist born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. Her keen eye for the creative stems from her whimsical approach to life, effervescent personality, and bold aesthetic. Jerchovia’s resourcefulness and passion for her craft have allowed her to take great leaps of faith in both art direction and fashion. In both disciplines, her journey has come full circle. Jerchovia’s childlike curiosity has allowed the development of her personal style (art/design and fashion) and reflects her love of color, pattern, and thoughtful design. She hopes to one day become a Creative Director to provide culturally relevant solutions within the advertising industry. As an entrepreneur, Jerchovia seeks to develop her fashion brand MOXEY which takes an innovative and artistic approach to upcycle fashion design. Both art direction and fashion design allow Jerchovia the opportunity to be a pioneer in the creative industry. Currently, Jerchovia is an Art Direction Resident at The Martin Agency and lead designer of MOXEY, a Miami-based upcycle fashion brand.
My fondest memories of Taylor University happened within the Business Department. Without the kindness displayed by the faculty, my experience would not have been heartfelt. Amazing human beings like Nancy Gillespie, Jeff Sherlock, Larry Belcher, and the one and only Jody Hirschy were my genuine reasons for continuing my studies at Taylor. Walking into Jody Hirschy's class was one of my favorite moments. That's where I first learned about the different scopes in marketing and how I could position myself as a creative within the industry; namely advertising. I challenge myself to be a purple cow often. I was offered an opportunity to travel to Seoul, South Korea by Dr. Sherlock who saw my passion for culture and diversity as a dual degree International Business student. Lastly, how could I forget my time with Steve Austin and the Taylor Student Organization family that molded me as not only a student leader but a lifelong one. These places I found a home, even as an island girl in the middle of the cornfields. These people and communities are what I think of fondly when I reminisce on my undergraduate experience.
My fondest classes were my specialized business courses. As I saw examples like Jody Hirschy and Jeff Sherlock with real experience outside the textbook it inspired me to find my own footing within my Marketing and International business degree. Jody was a constant source of encouragement, challenge, and wisdom as I was still putting my interests into words and forming my own path as a creative businesswoman and entrepreneur.
I think students can use Taylor's liberal arts foundation as a gauge for individual values, missions, and core beliefs. Here is where you take a stance, educate your why, and raise your voice in preparation for the 'real world.'
Many times I felt like a fish out of water; an island girl, in love with the city in the cornfields. I learned that those experiences have given me points of reliability and grounding. My advice would be to find your tribe, lean into the identity God has purposed for your life and watch Him create your community.
