For the first 10 years after graduating Taylor with a BA in Communications I was in business. By 25 years old I was managing 30 employees and $6M of annual revenue with Enterprise Rent-a-Car. After that, I was in software sales (and later acquisitions) with ADP. However, my career path ultimately took a turn I never saw coming...I became a pastor. A calling I have enjoyed for the past 11 years. My time at Taylor learning written, verbal, and ultimately interpersonal communications was CRITICAL to every part of my career journey. I am thankful that I was led to that major which has served me so well!
I loved being part of Taylor's Theatre Department. I also spent significant time in the Taylor Chorale where I eventually met my wife.
One of my professors was a constant encourager. Another showed me what written communication excellence really looked like. And yet another led us to experience the beauty of God's creativity through song! One key staff member revealed a joy and purpose which can only be found in deeply embracing Christian community.
Taylor teaches "the whole person." That is critical in any arena. Through a liberal arts education you have the opportunity to become well-rounded as a speaker, leader, and ultimately steward any Kingdom influence Jesus entrusts to you.
Even knowing how my career would shape, shift, and ultimately see me leading a church campus of 4000+ people, I would still choose Communication as my major. Why? Because effective communication is essentially the ability to connect with your audience. And every role, from management, to sales, to pastoring requires the ability to connect. That is what Taylor prepared me for. And for that, I am truly grateful.
