After graduating from Taylor in January 2019, I began working for Indiana University as a clinical research data manager. In August 2019, I began taking classes on a part time basis through IUPUI working on my Masters of Science in Biostatistics. I spent three years working full time while taking classes on the side. In May 2022, I graduated with my MS in Biostatistics and took a position with Indiana University as a biostatistician for the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science. Additionally, starting in May, I began teaching an undergraduate course on the Fundamentals of Data Management as an adjunct instructor.
One of my most valuable experiences at Taylor was being a part of the mathematics department. Being able to have a place to connect with classmates who were in the same courses as me as well as get help from professors was invaluable. There were always resources available to help with coursework and academic growth, but also to help with spiritual and personal growth. I also deeply cherish many of the spiritual experiences at Taylor that were available to me such as chapel. Additionally, living on campus allowed me to be a part of a wonderful community and make lifelong friendships and connections.
The professors of the mathematics department impacted both my academic, personal, and spiritual growth. Every professor cares not only about teaching you mathematics, but cares about you as a whole person. Personally, I had a strong interest in statistics and while that was not a full major at Taylor, professors within the department took measures to help me learn as much as I could in my statistics course and to gain exposure to new concepts and software. Being able to go to professors outside of class for help with coursework helped substantially with my academics. Additionally, having experience working within the department helped me grow great career skills such as communication and problem solving.
The Taylor liberal arts foundation is a great way to become well-rounded in many disciplines. Having to take classes outside of your major such as public speaking and expository writing helps build skills needed for a successful career. A simple knowledge of mathematics is not enough as much of the professional world revolves around communication and professionalism and those are skills strengthened through the foundational core classes.
Mathematics can lead you in so many different directions. Just because the majority of your classmates are going on a certain path such as teaching or straight to graduate school, does not mean that you have to go that direction. Do not be afraid to explore different career and schooling options post-graduation, many different careers are looking for mathematically and problem-solving minded individuals. Do not be afraid to do something different from your peers!
