I am a two-time graduate of Taylor University, earning a bachelor's degree in environmental biology in 2002 and a master's degree in environmental science in 2005. Since graduating, I have worked as a residence hall director, a park ranger, a field scientist, and a game warden. I am currently enjoying my 14th year as a game warden in Wisconsin. I also have an additional job as a Sheriff's Deputy, working boat, ATV, and park patrol. I married the pretty girl who sat next to me in the course, Foundations of Christian Thought. We have a couple of teenage kids at home who are active in hockey, baseball, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. I serve as an elder at my church. I also have coached youth hockey for a number of years. I cannot speak highly enough about my Taylor experience; both attending and working there. I still go on hunting and backpacking trips every year with the amazing Christian friends I made there. The Taylor Environmental Science program prepared me in every way for my career in conservation law enforcement. I am so thankful for God's guidance in my schooling and vocation!
I was fortunate enough to have met amazing faculty and staff along the way, who provided some amazing education experiences for me. I learned wetland delineation in the local area with Dr. Rothrock, a true expert in his field. Dr. Guebert took the geology classes to the Orangeville Rise, the Indiana Dunes, and a coal mine tour. The Rebers led us all over the Black Hills and wild West. Finally, Campus Safety officers allowed us to stay late hours in the Randall Center so we could cram for a big test.
Looking back, I am surprised that some of the classes that have contributed to my professional development were not necessarily the most fun or interesting to me at the time. Topics from soil science, hydrogeology, environmental ethics, and human relations in organizations are encountered quite regularly in my professional life.
We live in a messy world. There is a huge need for Christ and the stability that comes with such a firm foundation. Taylor helped me cultivate my God-given skills and interests and apply them in a noble profession. I am so thankful for the love, patience, and guidance that was poured into me by professors and hall directors. I constantly try to emulate these wonderful people!
