The Taylor Difference: What Makes the M.Ed. in Special Education Unique?

Flexible Non-Term Design
The flexible online design allows you to continue working in your classroom or community. Once accepted, you will have up to a year to start the 30-credit program. You can work at your own pace within each course’s 4-month completion timeframe. Already have credits? You may be able to transfer up to nine (9) credit hours.

Relational Model
Even though the program is 100% online, it is designed to be highly relational. In every course, there will be scheduled opportunities to connect with course instructors, classmates, and experts supervising clinical experiences.

One-on-one Mentor
Every M.Ed. in Special Education student will be assigned a mentor who will walk with you throughout your entire time in the program. In this personalized relationship, you will be able to ask questions and seek the wisdom of someone with a Christ-centered worldview who has experience in the field.

Concentrations
Choose from three concentrations: autism spectrum disorder, intense intervention, and mild intervention. These concentrations align with Indiana’s licensure categories for special education teachers.

Capstone Choice
Choose between a capstone action research project or a thesis paper, depending on your career and interest goals. Students who want to apply their program knowledge in their classrooms may choose the action research project. For those interested in policy, research, or higher education, the thesis paper may be more appealing.

In the Autism Spectrum Disorder concentration, students will be introduced to current research and theoretical models for understanding autism spectrum disorder and educational approaches. Students will advance their skills in behavior intervention and evaluate the resulting effects of implementing behavior intervention plans. They will learn to individualize interventions that account for sensory sensitivities, and mental health masking while promoting social skills, self-regulation-management, and social communications. Each course includes 10 hours of clinical experience.

In the Intense Intervention concentration, students will be prepared to take curriculum principles and research-based strategies to design instruction for individuals with significant disabilities. The courses equipped students to understand legal aspects, individualized programs, and use effective communication and collaboration to promote the success of individuals with significant disabilities. Courses include a field experience teaching students.

Students in the Mild Intervention concentration study the responsibilities and rights of individuals with disabilities and those who support them. Coursework is designed to equip educators to adapt curriculum and apply effective instructional strategies to meet individual needs. The program also emphasizes methods for special education teachers based on the science of reading. Some courses include hands-on field experiences to reinforce learning.
