Invest in the lives of students with special needs.
In Indiana and across the nation, schools and organizations are experiencing a shortage of special education teachers and professionals. Taylor University seeks to equip those with a passion to serve to fill in the gap.
At Taylor, we believe that every person is made in the image of God and is deserving of excellent education, regardless of ability. Our program equips you to make an impact in the realm of special education.
The M.Ed. in Special Education combines rigorous online curriculum with hands-on, clinical experiences.
AdmissionsFlexible Non-Term Design
The flexible online design allows students to continue working in their classrooms and communities. Once accepted, students have up to a year to start the program. You can work at your own pace within each course’s 4-month completion timeframe.
Relational Model
Even though the program is 100% online, it is designed to be highly relational. In every course, there will be scheduled opportunities to connect with course instructors, classmates, and experts supervising clinical experiences.
One-on-one Mentor
Every M.Ed. in Special Education student will be assigned a mentor that will walk them through their entire time in the program. In this relationship, students will be able to ask questions and seek the wisdom of someone with a Christ-centered worldview who has experience in the field.
Concentrations
Students choose from three concentrations: mild intervention, intense intervention, and autism spectrum disorder. These concentrations align with Indiana’s licensure categories for special education teachers.
Capstone Choice
Students can choose between a capstone action research project or a thesis paper, depending on their career and interest goals. Students who want to apply their program knowledge in their classrooms may choose the action research project. For those more interested in the administration or litigation of special education, the thesis paper may be more appealing.

Students in the Mild Intervention concentration study the responsibilities and rights of students with disabilities and those who support them, as well as the importance of early intervention. Coursework is designed to equip future educators to adapt general curriculum and apply effective instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of learners with exceptionalities. The program also emphasizes methods for teaching and assessing literacy in the early elementary classroom. Some courses include hands-on field experience to reinforce learning.
In the Intense Intervention concentration, students will be prepared to take curriculum principles and research-based strategies to design instruction for individuals with intense disabilities. The courses equipped students to understand the legalities, design individualized programs, and use effective communication and collaboration to promote the success of individuals with intense disabilities. Courses include a field experience teaching students with intense disabilities.
In the Autism Spectrum Disorder concentration, students will be introduced to current research and theoretical models for understanding autism spectrum disorder and educational approaches. Students will advance their skills in behavior intervention and evaluate the resulting effects of implementing behavior intervention plans. They will learn to individualize interventions that account for sensory sensitivities, and mental health masking while promoting social skills, self-regulation-management, and social communications. Each course includes 10 hours of clinical experience.
Our M.Ed. in Special Education is designed with flexibility for working adults balancing work and life commitments. It allows students to align the program with their career aspirations and calling, whether staying in the classroom, becoming a leader, or serving in the community.
By choosing a university that’s whole-heartedly centered on Christ, you will receive a biblically based, spiritually rich education that develops your professional journey and faith. If you are a working teacher, a graduated bachelor’s student, or someone outside the teaching world altogether, this program will help those who want to focus on disability areas.
Please note: the M.Ed. in Special Education is not a licensure program. However, a license is not necessary to participate in the master’s program. For more information on licensure programs at Taylor University, explore Transition to Teaching and other online licensure programs.
