CR&I Research

Image of rat researchResearch at the CR&I applies "classroom knowledge" (theory, principles, and methods) to real-life, hands-on investigations involving a systematic method to produce breakthrough understanding, discovery, and inventions.

Students and faculty team hand-in-hand to accomplish theoretical, experimental, basic, and applied research.  The Science Research Training Program (SRTP) oversees research in the natural sciences.  The Humanities Research Training Program (HRTP) oversees research in the humanities and social sciences.

Research is funded both externally and internally.  Within the past few years, Taylor has received external research funding from NASA, the Research Corporation, National Science Foundation, Indiana Space Grant Consortium, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.  Almost $2,500,000 in externally funded research has been conducted at Taylor over the past decade.

The following internal sources of funding are available:

  • STEP Grants: competitive seed funding up to $17,000 for faculty who are planning a large "step forward" in the scale of their research efforts
  • HRTP Research Fund: small grants up to $3,000 for humanities and social sciences faculty initiating research efforts
  • SRTP Summer Research Mini-Grants: small grants of about $3,000 are available for science faculty to hire a student for a small research project
  • Visiting Scholar: funding for faculty to visit and collaborate with world renowned  researchers for one to several weeks, or to bring a world renowned researcher to Taylor for the same period of time

The benefits of research for faculty and students include:

  • Scholarly papers and presentations in professional journals
  • Discoveries or inventions leading to start-up companies
  • Experience leading to career and job opportunities
  • Community impact through increased expertise and capability
  • Trained servant-leaders in the world for Christ
