Honors Program
Who May Apply to the Honors Program?
Technically, incoming freshmen wishing to apply to the Taylor Honors Program should have at least a 3.7 high school GPA and an SAT score of 1200 (or an ACT score of 27). A completed application will include this information, an essay, and a letter of recommendation from an AP-level teacher. Practically speaking, it's for students who are serious about learning (and who have demonstrated that by their earlier work).
Why Do "Honors" at All?
The Honors Program benefits students in several ways. First, Honors students have greater range of course choices. Second, they will be connected with other like-minded students of similar abilities, interests, and motivation. Third, they will graduate with "Honors Program Graduate" designation on their degree and transcript (which, of course, will be observed by all potential employers, graduate schools, etc.).
In addition, the program offers students the opportunity to be involved in significant opportunities on and off campus (whether ringing bells for the Salvation Army, attending the Honors retreat, or free admission to museums, concerts, and readings).
Finally, Honors Program students will have important off-campus study options, such as our own Oxford January trip.
Are Honors Classes More Difficult?
We hope so. The purpose of Honors courses is to provide additional stimulation and challenge for the highly motivated student; not simply to be more time consuming or graded by a different standard. And while these courses will require more commitment, honor students have historically met these high standards with high achievement.
