The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with specific regard to the field of Music.

 

Reference Books

  • The Harvard dictionary of Music. 2003. Ref 780.3 H26R
    A useful place to start for brief biographies and definitions. Also available as an eBook.

  • New Grove Dictionary of Music. 29 vols. 2001. Ref 780.3 G91 2001
    This is usually the first place to go when beginning music research.

  • The Garland encyclopedia of world music. 9 vols. 1998-2002. Ref 780.9 G18
    As the title indicates this focuses upon music from around the world including musical instruments and forms.

  • Oxford History of Western Music. 2005. Ref 780.9 Ox22R
    This is a major source to begin research and to discover bibliography on western music.

Finding Books and Music Scores:

  • Online Catalog
    • This is the main tool for finding music books and scores in the Taylor libraries
    • Use the Advanced search option to specify material format, campus, language, and date range
  • WorldCat
    • Listed under Essential Tools
    • Provides the most comprehensive tool for finding books relating to music and musicians, scores, and recordings
    • Note the ways to qualify your search, e.g., Sound Recordings and Musical Scores

Periodicals

  • Periodical Title List
    Search by journal title keyword or subject for online full-text journals. Also, try Browsing our full-text periodicals by subject, Music. The numbers in parentheses indicate about how many individual journals we have on that topic.

    To see another expression of music periodicals available in print or online through the Zondervan Library visit this page.

Music Recordings:

  • Audio CDs and LPs available in the Zondervan Library can be found through the Online Catalog.
    The Library has over 3,000 audio CDs (south end of the main level) and over 3,500 LPs (in storage but available for retrieval or browsing upon request).

  • Naxos Music Library
    Provides online access to more than 15,000 CDs and adds about 500 per month. These can be searched through the Naxos Music Library, found in the list of Databases.

Research and Citation Tools

  • RefWorks
    A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages, and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.

  • CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
    A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for expanding or refining a research strategy.

  • WorldCat.org
    "Cite this item" within individual item record lists the citation in APA, MLA, Chicago and more.
