The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with specific regard to the field of Music.

Reference Books

• The Harvard dictionary of Music. 2003. Ref 780.3 H26R
  A useful place to start for brief biographies and definitions. Also available as an eBook.


• New Grove Dictionary of Music. 29 vols. 2001. Ref 780.3 G91 2001
  This is usually the first place to go when beginning music research.


• The Garland encyclopedia of world music. 9 vols. 1998-2002. Ref 780.9 G18
  As the title indicates this focuses upon music from around the world including musical instruments and forms.


• Oxford History of Western Music. 2005. Ref 780.9 Ox22R
  This is a major source to begin research and to discover bibliography on western music.

Finding Books and Music Scores:

• Online Catalog
  • This is the main tool for finding music books and scores in the Taylor libraries
  • Use the Advanced search option to specify material format, campus, language, and date range
• WorldCat
  • Listed under Essential Tools
  • Provides the most comprehensive tool for finding books relating to music and musicians, scores, and recordings
  • Note the ways to qualify your search, e.g., Sound Recordings and Musical Scores

Finding Articles:

• JSTOR
  Provides full-text access to nearly 40 major music journals.


• Academic Search Premier
  Indexes over 80 music periodicals and provides full-text to more than 35 titles.


• Wilson OmniFile
  Provides full-text coverage for a variety of subjects including music.


• Arts & Humanities Citation Index
  An index only -- no full text.

Periodicals

• Periodical Title List
  Search by journal title keyword or subject for online full-text journals. Also, try Browsing our full-text periodicals by subject, Music. The numbers in parentheses indicate about how many individual journals we have on that topic.


• Music Periodicals page
  To see another expression of music periodicals available in print or online through the Zondervan Library visit this page.

Music Recordings:

• Audio CDs and LPs available in the Zondervan Library can be found through the Online Catalog.
  The Library has over 3,000 audio CDs (south end of the main level) and over 3,500 LPs (in storage but available for retrieval or browsing upon request).


• Naxos Music Library
  Provides online access to more than 15,000 CDs and adds about 500 per month. These can be searched through the Naxos Music Library, found in the list of Databases.

Internet Resources

• Yale University Music Library: Music Resources on the World Wide Web:
  A very extensive guide to resources arranged by more than sixty topics.


• Worldwide Internet Music Resources (William and Gayle Cook Music Library, Indiana University School of Music)
  Perhaps the most extensive web guide to resources for music study, performance, and research.
  
  Two resources of special note from the IU site include:
  • An extensive list of music research databases
  • Music Journals and Magazines, Newspapers and Periodicals
    A very extensive list of music-related "journals and magazines" that is broad in genre and geography.
• Music Library of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign - Internet Resources
  A less comprehensive but quite useful gateway to Internet music resources.

Online Scores:

• Choral Music Library


• Sheet Music Archive
  A growing collection of public domain scores but limits you to two downloads per day in the free version.


• RowyNet - Sheet Music Archive
  Claims to have nearly 1,400 public domain scores available for download.


• Neue Mozart-Ausgabe
  The definitive collection of the complete Mozart corpus digitally for study and research purposes.

Sheet Music Collections:

• Duke Guide to Sheet Music
  A useful guide to many sheet music collections some of which are digitally available on the Internet.
  
  For example, it identifies two extensive sheet music collections:
  • One at Indiana University, Bloomington
  • Another at the U.S. Sheet Music Database at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign with over 100,000 pieces
• For further exploration of Internet resources:
  David Mattison. "Music to Soothe the Savage Searcher: Classical Music Databases and Web Resources."
  An extensive article on numerous music web-based research resources; well worth exploring.

Research and Citation Tools

• RefWorks
  A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages, and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.


• CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
  A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for expanding or refining a research strategy.


• WorldCat.org
  "Cite this item" within individual item record lists the citation in APA, MLA, Chicago and more.
