Printing Problems Using the Thin Client Computers
09.27.2007
Due to an unknown technical issue, the thin client reference computers in the library are periodically unable to print. Although the computer can see the printer, and will allow a user to actually send a document to the printer, the document does not actually print. Here is a way to identify if the machine you sat down at is having a problem so that you don't start using it, only to find it can't print a web page or document you have been working on.
- Choose Start (Left bottom corner of the screen)
- Choose Printers and Faxes
- Click on the printer you want to make sure is able to print (The default printer has a black circle with a check mark in the center.)
- On the left hand menu of the Printers and Faxes window, choose Set printer properties.
- When the printer properties window appears, choose the Print Test Page button.
- If the dialog returns a dialog that starts: "A test page is being sent to the printer . . ." and a test page prints to the printer, the computer is able to print. If any other message appears, it is not working.
If you restart one of the thin clients, all saved documents on the computer will be erased. All documents that have been downloaded or saved to the thin client are deleted upon a restart.
If the computer is not able to print, turn it off and then back on again. You may want to walk through the above steps to make sure the machine is able to print before beginning again after the computer has been restarted.
Be aware that the Reference Desk has a flash drive you can borrow if you have a document you need to save and move to another computer so you can print it. Feel free to ask the librarian about borrowing it.
