Off-Campus Study

As a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Taylor University participates in the Latin American Studies Program in San Jose, Costa Rica. Consortium relationships have also been established with Trinity Christian College's Semester in Spain, in Seville, and with Bowling Green State University's Academic Program in Tours, France. Through these programs, students can earn up to 16 credits in a semester. Many Taylor students have studied in the Seville and Tours programs over the years.
The department of modern languages provides faculty-led off-campus experiences during the January term and during the Summer Session.
The Modern Language department cooperates with other Taylor departments and offices on a variety of off-campus opportunities. Many students travel abroad with Taylor World Outreach groups; and language is a vital component of the semester option to Cuenca, Ecuador, for Business (fall) or for Biology or Physics (Spring).
Every summer since 2003, the Taylor Modern Languages department has offered an Intensive Spanish Summer Course. Currently, Taylor students are pursuing the summer option in Ecuador, South America, partnered with Iglesia Cristiana Verbo de Cuenca. But the summer trip locales and experiences have varied in the past and they will continue to vary in the future. 2003 - 2005, Taylor groups traveled to Mexico, beginning in Mexico City with an intensive introduction to Mexican culture, followed by an intensive grammar session in Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. More recently, Taylor groups have traveled to Ecuador-the introductory portion of the experience has been in Quito, with intensive grammar classes in Cuenca. In 2008, student application numbers were such that two groups went to Ecuador, one in June and one in July. Whatever the future locales, the format will remain basically the same: six credits of Spanish (intermediate or advanced) and two cross culture credits. Home stays with Spanish-speaking host families will be a feature, along with intensive target-language instruction.
On-Campus Activities
Department members provide a variety of out-of-the classroom experiences that allow students the opportunity to use the target language informally and spontaneously. These activities include on-campus immersion days, dinners, language tables, field trips and retreats.
The Lambda Delta chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the national French honorary society, was established at Taylor University in 1992. As one of over 300 chapters in the U.S. and France, the Taylor chapter strives to promote knowledge of the French-speaking world. Students selected for membership are inducted at the annual Pi Delta Phi spring banquet.
