My name is Sarah Buchan and I'm a video producer in Cincinnati, Ohio. I work for Aras Creative Co, a female owned & operated creative studio. Aras exists to create a more conscientious world by helping responsible and transparent companies create meaningful video content and advertising campaigns. I love this work and feel fortunate to be in the creative industry. During my time at Taylor, I got an internship at a local production company in my hometown (Cincinnati) and was fortunate enough to be hired full time as an assistant producer when I graduated. While in that role, I became a "Jill of all trades." I grew my producing & editing abilities and gained a love for cinematography. More recently, I have focused on producing large-scale videos for clients. A year and a half ago, I transitioned to my current job, where I serve as Production Manager. My work is both organizational and relational. A part of my role that I love is getting to build relationships with our network of freelancers that we partner with regularly. I also run our internship program and have a deep passion for mentoring for the next generation of creatives.
I am grateful for my time at Taylor, specifically for the friendships that I made on my wing (Third North English) and in the film and media program. Those friendships are still an important part of my life and I'm so grateful to have been shaped by those individuals while at Taylor.
I owe so much to John & Kathy Bruner! Early into my time in what was then called the Media Communication Department, they both recognized abilities in me that I hadn't seen in myself. I had the joy of being part of Envision with John, the student-led production team, where I got to produce videos for the department and the university. Kathy also helped me recognize my love for producing and encouraged me to tap into that part of my personality. In her Producing for Clients class, I gained real-world skills that served me well when I started my first job out of college. Her encouragement and mentorship played a huge role in the trajectory of my career and I am so grateful for that.
I think that the value of the liberal arts approach is thinking critically about an issue or an idea. The ability to analyze and critique something from multiple perspectives is really valuable, especially in the creative field. Additionally, the Film & Media Production major provides excellent training for aspiring filmmakers and creatives.
For anyone interested in pursuing a career in the creative industry or in video production, I would encourage them to talk to and learn from everyone they can! This industry is very relational. People want to work with individuals who are eager to learn, humble, and enjoyable to be around. One of the best things to do early in your career is to be curious and to ask as many questions as possible. As you build your portfolio, I would encourage you to also build authentic relationships -- those connections will take you far!
