English as a Second Language

Here for Non-Native English Speaking Students

Our ESL Program, the Institute for English Language Studies, provides more than just English language classes. While you will strengthen your ability to speak English, our program is also designed to help you face the challenges of learning a foreign language in a foreign country.

Through ESL at Taylor, English language learners will be prepared linguistically, academically, culturally, and spiritually for success in an immersive academic English experience at an American higher education.

Taylor’s English as a Second Language Program

You will be able to audit undergraduate Taylor courses as English language practice. This provides preparation in academic English, cultural orientation, and academic study skills.

Our program also provides a clear path to receive an undergraduate degree from a program of your choice. Along with strengthening your language skills, you will receive credit for the ESL courses you take. We will prepare you to succeed linguistically, academically, culturally, and spiritually in your first year of undergraduate study, which will hopefully lead to success for years to come. Our goal is for you to graduate from Taylor with an undergraduate degree of your choice, so you can pursue the calling God has for your life.

Taylor’s ESL program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

Invested Instruction

Our professors work with you to develop your English academic skills and abilities. You will receive individualized instruction from trained professionals from a variety of disciplines in a small classroom setting as well as one-on-one tutoring. As a Taylor ESL student, you will be paired with a qualified tutor, not only for the duration of the ESL program but also, upon request, throughout your first year of undergraduate study at Taylor University. Through this tutoring, you will receive individualized English instruction and practice that will support you in your ESL and undergraduate academic work. You will come away from the program with the required English proficiency, study skills, cultural knowledge, and life habits to help you succeed in your education, career, and life.

Cultural Immersion

In addition to taking courses in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture from highly qualified ESL teachers, you will experience life at an American university, learning in a setting that establishes meaningful spiritual and relational connections. As a student in our English as a Second Language program, you are welcomed as a part of a unique environment—the Taylor University community. This supportive and encouraging community offers not only cultural opportunities but also relationships and memories to guarantee you an engaging educational journey.

During your time at Taylor University, you will live in a residence hall with other students and participate in our residence life programs. You will also have opportunities to be involved in a variety of clubs and organizations, attend chapel services, and participate in Taylor activities and traditions that help increase your language skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
