Taylor University Lyric Theatre is presenting the one-act comic opera Gianni Schicchi in the Butz Carruth Recital Hall at 8 pm, Feb. 3, 4, and at 2 pm, February 5.
Gianni Schicchi was written by Giacomo Puccini, the composer of operatic masterpieces La bohème, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, and Turandot. Singers, actors, and orchestra members from Taylor University's Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance are joined by collaborators across the Taylor University campus in design and production work. Taylor's production will be performed in English.
Gianni Schicchi is based on an episode referred to in Dante’s famous Divine Comedy. The title character tricks the greedy family of a rich deceased Florentine man into giving him a large inheritance. The world of this opera is inhabited by colorful characters and fast-paced, humorous action interspersed with Puccini’s writing, which is exemplified in the aria O mio babbino caro, one of the most popular arias in opera.
Tickets are available for $10.00 in the Music Office, or at the door prior to the performances.
