The Open Doors report—a survey associated with the U.S. Department of State that measures study abroad and service learning trips from colleges and universities in the United States to international destinations—has accorded high national rankings to Taylor University’s overseas learning and serving programs.
In the category Total Number of Study Abroad Students: Top 40 Baccalaureate Colleges, Taylor is ranked eighth nationally. Taylor also achieved a fourth-place ranking among Baccalaureate Colleges for the number of students who experienced a short-term trip, and sixth among Top 40 Baccalaureate Colleges for the percentage of students who participated in either a service, ministry or study abroad experience.
Open Doors is a comprehensive information resource on U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit from their home colleges, and is published by the Institute of International Education, an independent, not-for-profit organization with a network of over 1,200 member institutions. It is supported by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
The data used in the survey was compiled during the 2014-2015 academic year.
According to Taylor officials, while all three rankings are valuable indicators of the health of Taylor’s overseas study and service program, the eighth-place ranking for the overall number of students who travel and study abroad is significant because it compares Taylor with other baccalaureate schools that have larger student bodies. Taylor students study and serve abroad in 34 countries that include Australia, Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Greece, Honduras, India, Israel, Mexico, Namibia, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.
The Open Doors rankings come on the heels of Taylor’s 10th consecutive number one ranking in the Midwest in the U.S. News & World Report category Best Regional Colleges. Taylor has also been highly ranked by Forbes.com, The Princeton Review, and Washington Monthly.
