Poets' LoveBy Cathy Moore Published: Jan 24, 2014
At 7:30 pm on Friday, February 7, in the Butz-Carruth Recital Hall, Conor Angell and Luke Tyler present a recital entitled Poets’ Love with songs by Robert Schumann, George Butterworth, and William Bolcom. All three composers represented on this recital used contemporary texts written by poets they knew personally or admired deeply.
The two major song cycles on this program – Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Butterworth’s Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad – are the masterworks of their composers, as well as two of the most admired and frequently performed song cycles in their respective languages. Bolcom’s cabaret songs show the eclecticism characteristic of today’s composers, and illustrate his stated goal of erasing boundaries between popular music and art music.
