Media Communication Students Receive Several Awards from IASB

Taylor University students majoring in media communication received several awards for excellence in production from the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters including a first place award in the Corporate Video category. Seniors David Baker, Taylor MacKillop and Tim Kerigan, won first place for an employee orientation video for Creative Dining Services of Zeeland, Michigan.

Four media communication majors received second place wins. Junior Bill Parker took home two; one in the entertainment video category and the other in the video magazine category. Parker’s entertainment video “Star Wars vs. Star Trek,” highlights his skill with editing and special effects. The clip has been viewed more than half million times on YouTube and helped Parker land freelance work doing special effects work. Parker is studying this semester at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center.

Junior Alyssa Keeling won second place for her creative radio commercial for Taylor theatre. Junior Jon Helmholz and sophomore Chris Hecox won for their collection of WTUR radio promotional spots. Helmholz said he thinks he won because his professors taught him “the sky’s the limit.” He and partner Hecox worked a lot of late nights putting together the most professional and creative work they could. Hecox said, “the idea that we are being recognized for our work is truly humbling.”

Senior Josh Johnson says his third place win in the sports play-by-play category was a great plus as he’s preparing for graduation. The win will be a great jumpstart for Johnson’s sports announcing career. Johnson has done play-by-play for Lady Trojans’ volleyball and basketball for four years.

The Indiana Association of School Broadcasters honors both high school and college level media students in their annual competition.
