Taylor Student Newspaper, Staff, Wins National, State Awards

Published: May 10, 2013

Taylor University’s student newspaper, The Echo, and numerous student staff members have won several prestigious awards during the just-completed 2012-2013 academic year.

Headlining the awards were Echo editor Corrie Dyke and writer Kari Travis, who received the Mark of Excellence Award National Award for a piece in the General Column Writing category.

Additionally, Tim Riethmiller, The Echo’s photographer and creator of The Echo’s website was Mark of Excellence Award national finalist.

"It seems fitting that during this 100th year anniversary of The Echo newspaper, the students have earned accolades for their hard work,” said Dr. Donna J. Downs, Associate Professor of Media Communication at Taylor. “The Taylor of the future will know and understand the Taylor of the past based on the stories told by this staff and those who have gone before. I am excited to see these students earn outside recognition for a job well done."

The Echo’s website also won the Journalism Website of the Year Award for the State of Indiana.

"It's pretty astonishing that within the first six months of our online edition this staff won the Journalism Website of the Year Award from the Society of Professional Journalists,” said Downs. “They were up against Indiana University and Ball State in this particular contest and they came out on top."
