Taylor University officials have named 2010 alumnus Cheyenne (Chey) West as Director of Lacrosse Programs. West, a four-year lacrosse player and former team captain, will oversee Taylor’s men’s and women’s lacrosse programs and serve as coach of the men’s team.

West’s appointment marks a major commitment on Taylor’s part to the lacrosse program, according to Steve Mortland, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing. “We believe Chey is the perfect person to lead our lacrosse program forward,” he said. “Taylor’s lacrosse club program has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the past and we believe it is ready to move to that proverbial next level.”

Taylor plays in the Men’s and Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association – a collection of NAIA-affiliated and NCAA-affiliated colleges and universities. Taylor has fielded lacrosse club teams for the past 14 years.

As men’s coach, West inherits a team that finished the season 6-3 in 2012. He said the teams will scrimmage during the fall until the season’s start in March. “We play for the love of the sport, which is great,” said West. “We are still very competitive and our ultimate goal would be to win the national championship.”

“This is a huge new step for Taylor. We are really excited,” West added. “Our players are very excited and I am excited for the opportunity to develop this program. When I graduated people asked what my dream job was and I told them it was to come back to Taylor and develop the lacrosse program into a national competitor. I’m getting that opportunity now.”
