English professor and Media student win award

A book trailer illustrates Bowman's poem "The Wait"

When professor of English, Daniel Bowman, needed a video to promote his latest book of poetry, he turned to the media communication department. The collaboration resulted in a "book trailer," a video promotional piece used by publishing companies to visually engage poetry lovers on the Web. Bowman hired senior film and media production major Eric Nystrom ('12) to produce a video trailer based on his poem "The Wait." That book trailer has just won a Gold Aurora award in the Publishing category.

"Working with Eric was excellent," said Bowman. "He spent a lot of time developing his idea for the piece, and we had a great collaboration on the storyboard. He made sure we both loved the final product before he considered it done."

Aurora Award judges commented on the project's "excellent cinematography and strong emotional effect." The judges also remarked on how much they enjoyed Bowman's poetry!

Bowman said he's shown the video to colleagues and friends around the country, and "Every one of them has said what a superb book trailer it is. They were impressed that it was created by an undergraduate, which speaks well of both Eric and Taylor's Media Communication department."

Nystrom is now working in Los Angeles at Birns and Sawyer, a camera and lighting rental facility that serves Hollywood filmmakers.

Taylor film and media production major Sean Taylor is featured as an actor in the trailer and Ronnie Willmarth ('12), a journalism/media writing major provided the voice-over.
