About Spring Break Missions

Purpose

Baby and toyTo enable students to learn, minister, witness and develop a heart for Christ-centered service at home and abroad, through a framework of service-learning.

Methods

International and domestic projects are designed for students to use their gifts and talents in meeting spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of others through various methods which include one-on-one evangelism, children's ministry, teaching ESL, manual labor, and the performing arts.

Dates

Official Taylor Spring Break for 2010 is March 27st - April 5th. Exact trip departures and returns will vary, but every trip will leave from and return to Taylor.

Team Selection

Applications are available during the month of November and are due November 23rd. Students are required to attend one of the two information meetings being held on November 11 & 12, 8:30-9:30 pm to discuss the available projects and requirements. Teams are selected by team leaders beginning in December, and team members will be notified by email as teams are finalized. Teams begin meeting at the start of the semester in February.

Training

All students participating in Taylor Spring Break Missions are involved in significant training experiences. This includes a one credit service-learning course and a related local ministry opportunity preceding the trip (for more information see below).

Support Raising

Kids singingSpring Break teams work together to raise the total cost of their projects through prayer letters, personal contributions and other fund-raising events. Contributions are tax-deductible and non-refundable. Students who agree to participate are responsible to share equally in the financial obligation of the outreach. If sufficient funds are not raised, it is the responsibility of the group to cover the expenses personally or to raise additional funds. Additional personal student expenses include passport fees, immunizations and personal spending money.

Service Learning Course & Time Commitment

Students are enrolled in a one credit hour service-learning course called Short-term Mission Engagement, which includes mission project preparation, team meetings and the trip itself. This course does not meet the Cross-Cultural (CC) general education requirement. This class meets weekly on Monday evenings during February and March, and concludes with two debriefing meetings following spring break. The time commitment student should expect involves completing assigned readings, preparing two reflective assignments, sending prayer letters, obtaining travel documents, getting immunizations, and sending thank you notes. Additionally, team members are involved in a local service/immersion opportunity related directly to their Spring Break ministry preceding the trip as part of the overall educational experience.
