Leadership - Career Planning Assistant
The career planning assistant position is a paid, leadership position which contributes to the skills of the individual career planning assistant through serving those who come to the office seeking help for their vocational path.
A career planning assistant works six to ten hours per week in Career Development in the Student Union. Career Development is where professional preparation takes place as students plan their future. There are 12 career planning assistants who form a cohesive team to serve their peers and collectively work about 55 hour per week during each semester. Their primary task is to support the four professionals in the Career Development office to carry out the planned programs.
Career planning assistants will assist with resume and cover letter writing, portfolio development, internship searches, etiquette dinners, marketing the services of the Career Development office, setting up and implementing job fairs, conducting mock interviews, PowerPoint development, research for student and faculty inquiries, office software explanation and demonstration, graduate school exploration, research of recent graduates for an annual report and preparing mailings for constituencies served.

Assist the Career Development staff in the overall development, implementation and evaluation of the Career Development program
Time Commitment
Six to ten hours per week
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
As a group, the Career Planning Assistants will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Services
- Serve as liaison between Career Development and academic departments.
- Assist students utilizing the Career Development Office services: Career Direct, Career Resource Library, Taylor Career Network, Career Development Connections and CD collections, Internet access, office software products and conduct simulated interviews.
- Assist students with resumes and cover letters utilizing Word, a scanner and printer.
- Assist students with their portfolio in Blackboard.
- Research recent graduates for the annual graduate report.
- Assist students in the process of applying for campus leadership positions.
- Partner with a CD professional to develop workshops for students with various majors.
Career Resource Center
- Maintain efficient functioning and orderliness of the Career Resource Library.
- Update library materials to their most current status.
- Use, explain and maintain computer programs to increase the efficiency of the office.
Publicity
- Develop and implement marketing strategies for student programs and opportunities.
- Coordinate communications with the Echo, Ilium, News of the Day and e-mail.
Special Events
- Develop, plan, and conduct special public relations activities (e.g. Welcome Weekend, Parents' Weekend, Homecoming, Campus Visitation Days, etc.).
- Coordinate necessary activities for various job fairs/interview days.
- Organize and host special visiting groups (e.g. Seminary Day, Camp Days).
Office Duties
- Assist the full-time members of the Career Development staff whenever necessary.
- Attend all meetings called by the staff, usually on Tuesday evenings at 9:00.
- Attend the in-service training sessions and fall workshop.
