Resumes and Cover Letters
In our experience, polishing a resume is not as much of a problem as just getting started. Here are a few resources to help:
Helpful Web Sites
The Internet has innumerable Web sites that can be helpful to your search for a career or vocation. We've compiled a topical list of various sites that may be of interest to you.
Searching on the Internet
A search engine is a cluster of fast computers whose sole purpose is to help you find information on the Internet. The modern Internet is too huge and too dynamic to be catalogued in print, so "search engines" comb the net collecting information about various sites and cataloguing them.
To use a search engine, you type in the word(s), topic or phrase that you are looking for. The engine will return a ranked set of pages that contain your desired information.
Each engine has its own strengths and weaknesses. Follow the tips on each site to maximize your chances of finding the desired information.
- Google is the most widely used search engine on the Web, handling over 80 percent of all searches. Taylor uses the Google engine for searching of its Web site.
- Dogpile and Metacrawler perform "meta-searches" -- searching most of the top search engines on the Internet in order, and then compiles the results in pages for you to view.
- Yahoo is the original Internet search engine. It is still one of the best and easiest to use. It sorts each site it finds into an information structure that allows for browsing of Web sites by topic.
Finding a Location
Why, you may ask, is such a topic located on the career development site? Well, students sometimes want to know more about where a particular company is located, or if they are having an interview onsite, it may be helpful to provide directions. For example, you could show your friends a map to Taylor using Yahoo! Maps.
Another popular online map system is MapsOnUs which provides excellent driving instructions.
Avis Rent a Car also provides excellent maps with driving instructions.
Self-managed Credential File Forms for Education Majors
Other suggested documents for a completed self-managed credential file may include your resume, evaluation from your first student teaching experience, evaluation from your second student teaching experience, evaluation from your supervising professor, and an unofficial transcript, if you wish to use a booklet to show prospective employers.
Your Blackboard e-portfolio is the recommended option for your professional presentation.
