World Opportunities Week Unites Taylor Students With Mission Opportunities
10.15.2009
During the first week in November, the main floor of the Dining Commons will be filled with booths,
the chapel filled with services, and dorm rooms filled with visitors.
This is World Opportunity Week (WOW) at Taylor University, and this year, it is taking place November 1-6.
According to WOW co-director Katie Peterson, the theme for the event is "People get ready," which comes from Habakkuk 1:5, which reads, "Look at the nations and watch - and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told."
The chapel speaker for the week is Dr. Keith Phillips, president of World Impact. World Impact, based in Los Angeles, focuses on church planting and ministry in urban communities throughout the United States.
Marta Gabre-Tsadick, founder of Project Mercy in Yetebon, Ethiopia, will speak at the WOW kick-off event. Several Lighthouse trips have traveled to Ethiopia to work with Project Mercy during the month of January.
The cabinet also anticipates 40 mission organizations, and nearly 50 representatives to participate in the week.
Director of Student Ministries Mary Rayburn said WOW has a long-standing history at Taylor. According Rayburn, WOW was originally called Missions Awareness Week and expanded into a large campus event in 1981.
This year, Peterson said the WOW cabinet is working to incorporate as many different groups and organizations from campus as possible. She said, "We hope to work with other branches of TWO, TSO, international student organizations, and students from all departments to make WOW relevant to everyone on campus."
The cabinet is also working towards creating a World Opportunities Art Show for the first time.
Peterson says the cabinet's primary goal for the week is to encourage students to become more excited about the work is God is doing throughout the world. "WOW seeks to create a greater awareness on campus of world missions," she said, "And also to show students how they can get involved directly and through prayer support."
