Women's Soccer Rolls in 3-1 Victory

September 12, 2009

The Taylor women's soccer team defeated Hannibal LaGrange College Saturday by the score of 3-1 to improve its record to 2-3 on the season.

Taylor Women's Soccer - Yvette RattrayAfter being shutout in its first two games of the season, Taylor has now scored eight goals in the last three contests. Despite being outshot 17-9, the Trojans were efficient with their opportunities on goal.

"The offense is really clicking," said Taylor head coach Scott Stan. "Seven goals in the last two games is a lot better than one goal in the first three. If we keep playing together, I think we'll be alright."

After being fouled deep in the box at the midway point of the first half, freshman Cara Andjelich scored her second collegiate goal on the penalty kick for the first goal of the game.

It took the Trojans nearly a full half to light the scoreboard again, but Yvette Rattray's first goal of the season was well worth the wait. The junior forward nailed a left-footed shot from the far left edge of the 18-yard box to give Taylor a 2-0 lead. Allison Guion assisted on the play.

Rattray struck again in the 76th minute when she received the ball from Guion on the left side of Hannibal's goal. Her point blank shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, but continued toward the goal and found its way to the back of the net.

"I think both teams played pretty well, considering we both played 90 minutes yesterday," Stan said following the game. "I thought we controlled the ball well. We had six freshmen in the starting lineup today. I was proud of the team."

Hannibal LaGrange avoided the shutout when Alysa Askew scored with less than a minute to play.

Taylor goalkeeper Shawna Lane had nine saves and Rattray led the Trojans with three shots on goal.

A senior from Mechanicsburg, Pa., Guion's two-game weekend stat sheet includes three goals and two assists.

Taylor (2-3) is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they travel to Calumet College at 4 p.m.
