Lady Trojans Stung in Season Opener
August 28, 2009
Playing in its season opener at Cedarville Friday, the Taylor women's soccer team gave up a goal 29 seconds into the second half as the Lady Trojans fell 1-0 at the Cedarville Classic.
Taylor (0-1) head coach Scott Stan's squad had to wait more than two hours longer than expected to get its season started due to several lightning delays that took place throughout the day and evening.
When play began around 9:30 p.m., Cedarville and Taylor battled to a scoreless tie in the first half of play. Cedarville took six shots compared to just two for Taylor in the opening frame.
Just 29 seconds into the second half is when Cedarville sophomore Kelsey Watkins netted an unassisted goal on a low shot to the far post for the only goal of the night.
Taylor senior Allison Guion gave her team a chance in the 86th minute with a close range shot, only to be denied by a Cedarville defender who made the save.
By game's end, Taylor had fired four shots on goal while Cedarville had five. Taylor senior goalkeeper Shawna Lane ended the night with four saves.
Taylor will be back in action tomorrow at the Cedarville Classic against Houghton at 2 p.m. The Highlanders, NAIA National Tournament qualifiers each of the last six years, played to a 0-0 draw with Marian on Friday in a game that was called at the end of regulation due to lightning.
