Mission Statement
Basketball at Taylor University is a unique experience. It is very demanding physically and mentally because we feel a real burden to develop the talents God has given us to the fullest. Only through overcoming obstacles and working through adversity can one know the exhilaration of the climber as she reaches the peak or the thrill of the athlete as she does that which seemed impossible. We will work together, struggle together, grow together, pray together and ultimately succeed together. Our young women will be changed because of their participation in our basketball program. We want that change to be in the direction that God wants them to go.It is our purpose to help young women develop the ability to truly maximize God's gifts in an environment where Christ-likeness and educational achievement are a priority. Number of games won, championships attained, "big games" victories achieved then become an outgrowth of an every day attitude that our Father God is going to do something special in our lives.
This mission statement acknowledges that it is not so much the result as the process that God can honor and use. We will become aware of the importance of the vital personal relationships that really test and develop our faith. In other words, as a team we have to be tolerant of our own and other's weaknesses, learn to build up each other's strengths and become aware that together we must endure difficult times to truly see the best in each other. As Christians we will make these spiritual priorities, and look forward to the growth God gives us in these areas.
In the basketball program results are important in that they are a large part of defining excellence and determining the quality of what we do, and yet how we do things is as important as what we do. Certainly, we will not be perfect, but we can be faithful. Development of the qualities of personal and team leadership, accountability to each other, perseverance in the face of adversity, singleness of purpose and an understanding of the importance of doing our best each day will help these young women lead lives of significance beyond their college years.
In outlining these objectives, several things come to mind. They include:
- Having a passion for what is done. (II Sam. 24:18-24)
- A sense of excellence about what is done. (Prov. 22:29)
- Learning to do one's best without comparison to others. (Gal. 6:4)
- It is impossible to do one's best without doing something good for others around you. (I Cor. 13:4-7)
- Being part of a team means seeing the good in each other. Play to our strengths and stay away from our weaknesses. (Phil. 4:8)
- Enjoy the process! "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him to help you do it and He will." (Ps. 37:5)
- True greatness comes in serving others. (Mark 10:38-45)
- We really do need each other. (Eccl. 4:9-12)
