Softball Sweeps to Notch First Two Wins
March 07, 2009
Taylor softball got back on track with two victories over Hanover College on Saturday. Taylor took care of the NCAA Div. III program by the scores of 4-3 and 4-0. With the sweep of the Panthers, Taylor moves to 2-2 on the season.
In game one the ball was handed to Senior Jill Tomaszewski, and she did not disappoint, throwing a complete game gem. Allowing only 4 hits and recording an impressive 12 strikeouts, Tomaszewski shut down the Hanover bats.
The Lady Trojan offense got off to a quick start, getting three runs to cross the plate in the top of the first. The first four Taylor batters reached base, with Laurie Shumaker and Laura Strode scoring on errors. Senior Lindsey Stone followed with a single to score Liz Lewellen, rounding out the scoring. Taylor's bats pounded out eight hits, finished off by a Laura Strode RBI double in the 6th.
Hanover rallied in the 7th with three runs, but Tomaszewski finished off the game at 4-3 for Taylor's first win of the season.
Game two found a similar formula of success for the Lady Trojans, as quality pitching and a big inning behind the plate led to victory number two.
The game started off a pitcher's duel as Jessica Frankhauser and Hanover's Emily Merrill kept the scoreboard at zeros until the Lady Trojan half of the 6th inning. Senior Lindsey Arnold led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Alyssa Brodbeck and Tomaszewski reached base, and an Emily Kramer triple chased in two more runs for Taylor. Laurie Shumaker finished off the scoring with a bunt single, plating Kramer.
The 4-run sixth inning was part of 10 hits for the Lady Trojans, while Frankhauser held the Panther's at bay. The junior pitcher went the full 7 innings, allowing only 4 hits while striking out 7 on the way to the Taylor's first shutout of the season.
The Lady Trojan softball team returns to action on Thursday, March 12th when they travel to face off against Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 3:00pm.
