Trojan Softball Splits Pair of Shutouts
April 23, 2009
In their final conference game of the regular season the Taylor University softball team split with cross-county rival Indiana Wesleyan, winning game one 6-0 and dropping game two 8-0 in five innings. Taylor now stands at 14-22 on the season and 4-12 in conference play. The Wildcats are 29-14 (8-8 MCC).
Liz Lewellen started the Trojans off early with a two-out home run in the bottom of the first inning of game one. Lindsey Arnold followed with a single to center field and Emily Kramer moved two runners with an infield single. With the bases loaded Jill Tomaszewski drew a walk to force the second run of the opening frame.
Three innings later a pair of Wildcat errors and a walk forced three runs and opened the flood gates for Taylor. Alyssa Brodbeck capitalized on the extra opportunity with an RBI single that scored Arnold. Taylor ended the inning with four more runs and ultimately the 6-0 victory.
While brother Travis took the mound on the baseball diamond across campus, senior Jill Tomaszewski threw a complete-game shutout adding five strikeouts to her team-leading total (82) for her fifth win of the season.
The Wildcats turned the tables in game two with seven runs in the first two innings. Freshman Kristin Bauer relieved Jessica Fankhauser in the second but the damage was already done. After five innings Indiana Wesleyan had an eight-run lead which ended the game.
IWU freshman Abbie Forman highlighted game two with a complete-game no-hitter, one strikeout and a walk.
Taylor takes the field for the final time of the 2009 regular season on Saturday when they play host to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
