Trojans Drops First at Wheaton Invitational

September 04, 2009

The Taylor University men's soccer team lost to Judson University 6-4 today in the opening game of the Wheaton College Invitational. The loss drops the Trojans to 1-4 on the season.

Judson, which is one of the more storied soccer programs in the NAIA, is receiving votes in the NAIA national polls.

The Eagles struck first in the high-scoring affair with a goal ten minutes into the game. Their second goal just four minutes later put the Trojans into an early 2-0 hole.

Dominating much of the offensive game in the first stanza, Judson outshot the Trojans 10-3. However, Taylor made the most of their few opportunities scoring twice on those attempts.

In the 17th minute Joel Pincomb found Joel Ritz for his first goal of the season, and freshman David Pfeifer netted his first goal as a Trojan on an unassisted attempt in the 31st minute.

The Trojans could not narrow the gap any closer as Judson responded to each of Taylor's threats and took a 3-2 lead into halftime.

Judson struck first in the second half when Gustavo Oliveira capitalized on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to push the Eagles' lead to two goals.

The penalty shot was the first of three in the physical outing that was marred by 10 yellow cards and 21 fouls. The Trojans' Tyler Beachler connected on the two other penalty kicks for his third and fourth goal of the season.

For the second consecutive game, Taylor revitalized its offensive attack in the second half, outshooting Judson 14-11. Ian Perrotte led the Trojans with 6 shots and 4 on goal for the game.

Josh Giuliano recorded seven saves in net for the Trojans.

Tomorrow the Trojans meet Wheaton College for the first time in the program's history. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. CST. Live stats will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/wheaton/msoc.
