August 28, 2009

The Taylor University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 11-1 to Notre Dame College (Ohio).

The Falcons, who entered the contest ranked No. 7 in the NAIA national polls, kept the Trojans on the defensive for the majority of the afternoon. Posting a 4-0 lead in the first half on 12 shot attempts, Notre Dame struck first just 5:30 into the game.

Forward Luke Holmes took a shot on goal which caromed off a Trojan defender into the net for his first of four goals on the afternoon. Six Falcon players netted goals in the contest.

Taylor's Stephen Groves recorded the Trojans lone goal of the game in the 52nd minute after Tyler Beachler's attack was deflected.

Taylor's offense put up just nine shots to the Falcons' 28. Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Giuliano saved four shots in nearly 67:00 of action. Junior Kyle Drake took over the net for the remaining 23 minutes and saved two shots, allowing two goals.

The Trojans are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to McKendree University at 4 p.m.

The Bearcats played Indiana Wesleyan on Friday night as part of a co-hosted tournament with the Trojans and Wildcats. Notre Dame travels to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
