Trojans Fall in Final Regular Season Match

October 20, 2009

With the chance to host a first round conference tournament match on the line, the Taylor men's soccer team fell to Grace College 2-1 on Tuesday.

The Trojans drop to 7-10 on the season and 4-4 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Without a match remaining in the regular season, the best the Trojans can finish is tied for fourth place.

In a scrappy affair, the Trojans found themselves trailing 1-0 after Grace's Adam Kitchens assisted Darrell Goff in the 17th minute.

Later in the first half Taylor's Tyler Beachler had a chance to knot the score but missed a penalty kick wide leaving the Lancers with the 1-0 lead at the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half the Trojans lined up for their second penalty kick of the game. This time junior Ian Perrotte connected on the unmolested attempt and tied the score at 1-1.

The two teams battled for almost 27 minutes before Greg Fulton scored the winning goal for the Lancers off an assist by Goff with less than six minutes remaining.

Grace outshot Taylor 27-15 and managed one more corner kick for the contest.

Trojan goalkeeper Josh Giuliano recorded nine saves, his second highest total this season.

Beachler once again led the offensive attack for the Trojans attempting six shots and three on goal. After five consecutive matches with at least one goal, the NAIA's fifth leading goal scorer was held without a counter for the second straight outing.

Perrotte and Kris Schonewill each contributed two shots on goal for the Trojans.

Taylor is idle until the first round of the MCC tournament on Saturday, Oct. 31. They will find out their first round opponent this Saturday following the conclusion of MCC regular season action.
