October 17, 2009

The Taylor University men's soccer team dropped to 7-9 (4-3 MCC) on the season after a 2-0 loss to Indiana Wesleyan Saturday night.

Daniel MillerThe Trojans attempted to play possession ball vs. the Wildcats, but in turn were forced into defensive ball as the Wildcats controlled much of the match.

Taylor managed just 4 shot attempts, and 0 on goal in the physical cross-county rivalry matchup while Indiana Wesleyan posted 16 shots.

After entering the break tied 0-0, IWU lit the scoreboard 12 minutes into the second half when Austin Bock connected on a header off a corner kick to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Taylor saw its best opportunities with seven minutes remaining in the contest but could not come up with the equalizer.

With three minutes to go, IWU's Jesse Bassett connected on a rebound goal to extend the lead to 2-0 and seal the win.

Taylor's Tyler Beachler entered the match ranked fourth in the NAIA in goals scored but was held without a goal for the first time in the last six outings and without a shot on goal for the first time in the last ten matches. Until tonight, Beachler had attempted at least one shot in 18 consecutive matches dating back to Oct. 15 of last season.

With the loss Taylor is tied with IWU for fourth place in the conference standings with one regular season match remaining. A Trojan win over Grace College on Tuesday afternoon will secure a home match in the first round of the Mid-Central College Conference tournament.
