Trojans Win First MCC Match, End Skid

October 17, 2009

The Taylor University women's soccer team defeated Huntington University 1-0 today, ending a five-game losing streak. The Trojans improve to 5-9-1 (1-5 MCC).

The two teams were knotted at 0-0 at halftime despite Taylor dominating the ball for much of the first stanza and outshooting Huntington 7-1.

Six minutes into the second frame Yvette Rattray took the ball to the end line and crossed it to Karen Cleary, who connected on a header for her first goal of the season, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Cleary's counter was just the third Trojan goal in conference play and the third time they have scored a goal in consecutive matches this season. Jenna Fahlen scored Taylor's lone goal against Bethel College last Tuesday.

Huntington's most threatening attempt came 15 minutes later when Justine Jost broke free of the Taylor defense and lined up a shot under little duress. Taylor goalkeeper Shawn Lane deflected the ball over the crossbar to protect the Trojan lead.

Huntington managed just three more shot attempts for the balance of the game but could not find the back of the net.

Lane recorded the shutout with five saves.

All 20 players on Taylor's roster saw action in this Senior Day and Homecoming event. The Taylor athletic department honored Allison Guion, Lizzy Hawn, Lane and Becca Miller before the match for their investment in Taylor athletics.

The Trojans return to the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Goshen for a 6 p.m. start.
