Trojans' Skid Continues in 2-1 Loss to Pilots
October 13, 2009
After posting four consecutive conference losses to the top four teams of the Mid-Central College Conference the Taylor University women's soccer team was inches away from sending Tuesday's match against Bethel College to overtime.
Trailing 2-1 with less than five minutes to go in the game, senior Allison Guion attempted two shots that connected with the crossbar and goal post but missed the net, and the Trojans dropped their fifth consecutive game.
Taylor falls to 4-9-1 (0-5 MCC) on the season.
The Pilots didn't threaten the Trojan defense often, but they made their few opportunities count, scoring a pair of goals on just four shot attempts.
It took over 31 minutes to move the scoreboard, but on her only shot attempt of the game, Pilot Pua Hall eluded a defender and scored from three yards out to give Bethel the 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later the Pilots struck again, this time with Hall assisting Monica Davis for a 10-yard strike from the right side.
With the 2-0 lead, Bethel went on the defensive, not attempting another shot for the balance of the game.
The Trojans became the aggressors, however, attempting eight more shots. It wasn't until the 81st minute that Taylor closed the gap off an Emily Von Raesfeld corner kick. Jenna Fahlen connected on a header for her first goal of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1.
It appeared Taylor would match Bethel's quick hitters when Guion's boots were deflected by the crossbar and post. Becca Miller lined up one last attempt as time expired that sailed wide and crushed the hopes of a comeback.
Taylor plays host to Huntington on Saturday at 4 p.m. as a part of homecoming festivities. The seniors will also be honored before the match.
