Taylor Football Routs TIU, 48-7
October 24, 2009
The Taylor football team piled up 516 yards of total offense Saturday as the Trojans defeated Trinity International 48-7 at Jim Wheeler Memorial Stadium. Taylor improves to 4-3 overall for the program's most wins in a season since 1999.
Behind a dominant performance from Taylor's offensive line, four different backs combined for 275 total rushing yards. Leading the way were Kyle Anderson and Cory Anderson, who ran for 98 and 73 yards, respectively. Both totals were career bests for the pair of brothers from Oak Hill, Ind.
Junior quarterback Shaun Addison ran for a pair of one-yard scores and threw for 219 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-28 pass attempts.
Taylor, which improves to 2-2 in the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League, racked up a staggering 26 first downs in the game compared to just seven for TIU. Taylor converted on 10 of 15 third down opportunities.
Pagel Williams led a stingy Taylor defense, which allowed a season low 143 yards to the visitors. Williams recorded four tackles and one for a loss. Ryan Graydon and Nahum Masimer each recorded a sack in the game.
Taylor wasted no time putting points on the board, scoring on its first possession of the game. The drive was sparked on a third-and-seven pass play from Addison to Kris Kemp for 30 yards. The Trojans then ran the ball seven straight times concluding with a one-yard touchdown run by Addison. Trenton Schmale ran the ball in for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.
Addison took to the air on Taylor's next possession, completing all three of his passes for 45 yards. The last completion went to Trevor Terrell for a 14-yard scoring strike as Taylor went up 14-0.
The next Taylor scoring drive got its start 15 minutes later after Nathan Boland forced a fumble that Masimer recovered at the TIU 45. The big play of that drive came when Addison found tight end Travis Tomaszewski in the middle of the field for a 29-yard completion down to the TIU one-yard line. Addison then scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to give the Trojans a 21-0 lead at halftime.
To cap an eight play, 61-yard drive to start the second half, Cory Anderson found paydirt from seven yards out as Taylor took a 27-0 lead.
Trinity International quarterback Daniel Beals took matters into his own hands on the ensuing possession, accounting for all but four yards of a 72-yard drive that ended in a 23-yard Beals scamper to the end zone.
Taylor's answer for Beal's drive was swift. Addison completed two passes for 14 yards and ran for another 24 before Cory Anderson recorded his second score of the game on a 5-yard run to make it 34-7 Taylor.
After forcing TIU to punt, Taylor marched down the field to score on its fourth straight possession. Kyle Anderson was the workhorse on the drive for the Trojans, as he rushed four times for 53 yards including his first career touchdown of 11 yards.
The Taylor scoring was closed out 12 minutes later when senior Pagel Williams fielded a punt and dashed 53 yards to his third punt return touchdown of the season to give Taylor the 48-7 win.
Taylor made the most of eight trips to the red zone, scoring on six of the eight opportunities.
For the third time this season, Taylor committed no turnovers in the game. The Trojans were called for eight penalties for 82 yards.
Taylor will travel to Indianapolis next Saturday for a 1 p.m. meeting with Marian. The Knights and Trojans are currently tied for fourth place in the MSFA Mideast League standings.
