Baseball Completes Sweep of IWU

April 18, 2009

The Taylor University baseball team recorded two wins over Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 7-5 and 11-1 (5 innings). It was the second time the Trojans have swept the Wildcats in the last three days. Following the wins Taylor improves to 27-13 (13-5 MCC) on the season. The Wildcats fall to 14-32 (5-15 MCC).

The Trojans' Taylor Kinzer took the win on the mound in game one by striking out six batters in seven innings. He helped his own cause with a three-run home run in the third that extended the Trojan lead, 6-1.

Indiana Wesleyan provided a scare with three runs on three hits in the fifth inning to sneak within one run of the Trojans. However, savvy base running by Ethan Houts gave Taylor an insurance run in the sixth inning and ultimately the win, 7-5.

Brent Kimbro won Taylor's seventh run-rule game of the season in game two thanks to a two-out party in the second inning. With two outs already in the book Michael Nassar swung the momentum by taking advantage of a Wildcat error to score the inning's first run. That was followed by five consecutive RBI hits from Paul Passiales, Matt Maple, Michael Kraynak, Ryne Otis and Cassidy Emery which led to a 6-0 Trojan lead.

Taylor tallied three more runs in the next frame highlighted by Nate Hillery's two-RBI triple. Otis finished the game off with a bases-loaded walk-off hit in the fifth.

Four Taylor batters connected on two hits as part of a 12-hit team outing.

Saturday's double header capped off six games in three days for the Trojans. They travel to the University of St. Francis for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
