Baseball Drops Final Game at Berry
March 24, 2009
After sweeping 21st-ranked Berry College in a doubleheader on Monday, the Taylor baseball team fell in the final game of a three-game set with the Vikings today, 12-7. The loss drops the Trojans to 14-7 on the season.
Taylor took an early lead scoring five runs in the first two innings off six hits. Heading into the third inning the Trojans led it 5-1. That's when the Viking bats came to life.
Berry posted four runs in the third inning, five in the fourth and two more in the sixth before the Trojans could cross the plate again. Taylor posted a run each in the seventh and the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
While the Trojans matched the Vikings' offensive output of 12 hits on the game, Taylor left nine batters on base to Berry's one. Cassidy Emery led the Trojans at the plate going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs.
Freshman Travis Carsten started the game for Taylor and was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits.
The Trojans continue their Spring Break trip on Wednesday when they take on Reinhardt College in Atlanta, Ga. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
[Editor's Note: The NAIA Top 25 Baseball rankings released Tuesday at 5:30 had Berry ranked No. 12 in the nation]
