Apprehensive faces greet the ski park in Nashville, IN, watching children the ages of around eight, nine and ten snowboard down the biggest slopes. The nervous smiles belong to some of the international students who have never seen snow before. A pair of skis in one hand and ski poles in the other for fall prevention, the group of twenty international students set out to conquer the ski slopes of Indiana. Several hours later, the group congregate back to the van, with additional bruises, cuts, scrapes and broad smiles, to return back to Taylor University.
This ski trip is one of the many events the International Student Society (ISS) enjoys in order to explore the areas surrounding Taylor. Another popular activity is a weekend getaway to Chicago exploring museums, China Town, Michigan Avenue with all its shops, and Navy Pier. On campus, AAA (the Asian Awareness Association) hosts nights of Asian food or Bubble Tea. The International students bring to the Taylor community their various languages, customs and food representing countries such as Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Kenya, India, Taiwan, Korea, Bahamas to name a few. In return, the Taylor community offers life-long friendships, spiritual and academic growth.
The Office of International Students is the umbrella under which the International Student Society exists, to provide support services to international students who are adjusting to life in America. The main support services provided are the International Student Orientation and immigration matters, along with some academic advising and adjustment issues. The Director of International Student Programs works as a liaison between the students and the University.
International Student Society serves as a peer support group. Most of the activities are organized by this organization in consultation with the Director of International Student Programs. Most of the activities have either a social or educational purpose.
The Multicultural Council will host or promote specific conferences and events designed to educate the campus community regarding multi-ethnic issues.
